Important notes
- Dividends in Italy are subject to a flat 26% substitute tax (imposta sostitutiva). This applies to both qualified and non-qualified participations since 2018.
- The 26% tax is typically withheld at source by the financial intermediary (ritenuta alla fonte). No further tax is due on the annual tax return for these dividends.
- Dividends from companies resident in tax-haven jurisdictions are taxed differently: they are subject to IRPEF (progressive income tax) on the full amount rather than the flat 26% rate.
- Dividends from Italian government bonds and equivalent instruments are taxed at a reduced rate of 12.5%.
