Important notes
- Portugal does not have a traditional wealth tax. However, AIMI (Adicional ao IMI) acts as a property surtax on the aggregate taxable value (VPT) of all Portuguese real estate owned by a taxpayer.
- Your total property value is below the AIMI exemption of €600,000. No AIMI is due.
- AIMI is in addition to standard IMI (Imposto Municipal sobre Imoveis), which is levied annually by municipalities at rates between 0.30.45% for urban properties, and 0.8% for rural properties. IMI is not included in this calculation.
- AIMI is calculated on the Valor Patrimonial Tributario (VPT), which is the tax-assessed value of the property as registered with Finangas. This may differ from the market value.
- Portugal has no inheritance tax for close family members (spouses, children, parents). Inheritance is subject to a flat 10% Stamp Duty (Imposto do Selo) only for non-exempt beneficiaries.
